Thank you, LeMay, for making our special occasion so enjoyable and stress free.

Scam Awareness Guide - Email Safety Edition

In our digital age, where convenience and speed reign supreme, email has become an essential tool for communication. However, it’s also a favored playground for scammers looking to exploit unsuspecting individuals.

At Community 1st Credit Union, your safety is our priority, so we’re here to share some vital tips on how to keep your inbox—and your personal information—secure.

Recognize Phishing Attempts

Phishing emails are designed to look legitimate but are traps set by scammers. These emails often mimic messages from trusted institutions, such as banks or well-known companies, and ask you to provide personal information or click on malicious links.

  • Red Flags:

Look out for poor grammar, generic greetings (like “Dear Customer”), urgent language, and suspicious links or attachments.

  • What to Do:

Hover over links to see where they lead and verify the email sender’s address. Never click on links or download attachments from unknown or suspicious emails.

Don’t Share Personal Information

Legitimate organizations, including Community 1st Credit Union, will never ask you to share sensitive information such as your Social Security number, passwords, or account details via email.

  • Best Practice:

If you receive an email requesting personal information, do not respond. Instead, contact the organization directly through official channels to verify the request.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Adding an extra layer of security to your email account is one of the best defenses against unauthorized access. Two-factor authentication requires a second form of identification—such as a code sent to your phone—before access is granted.

  • How It Helps:

Even if a scammer manages to get hold of your password, they won’t be able to access your account without the second verification step
